Living in Ocala – Combined Driving, Bike Riding, and Symphonic Pleasures!
March 9, 2017
Weekend Entertainment Abounds in Marion County with International Driving Competition, Fat Tire Fun, Plus An Evening at the Symphony!
Diversity in choices in Ocala is the theme of this weekend’s line-up of entertainment. There’s a healthy dose of outdoor fun on the calendar, with the FEI Driving Dressage at Live Oak International starting today and running throughout the weekend.
Live Oak International
Live Oak International, in its 26th year, has become one of the largest combined driving events in the country. Combined Driving, in its own right, is an extreme sport and showcases the beauty and athleticism of horses through dressage, marathon, and obstacles. Since 2012 they have also added FEI level show jumping, which brings a whole new level of thrill to the event.
The event is a huge draw for avid equestrians and the non-horsey set as well, with a variety of activities including a 5K, shopping in the vendor village, family activities and of course the competition. The event is also well known for their VIP and competitor parties!
“Today, the competition attracts some of the best drivers, trainers, coaches and owners from around the world. Over the years, tens of thousands have come to watch the driving and, since 2012, Show Jumping during the Live Oak International Grand Prix. The Show Jumping event draws top riders, including past Olympic gold medalists. Once again 2017, the Grand Prix is part of the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping North American League.
“The combination of the two disciplines makes Live Oak International a one-of-a-kind event perfect for the seasoned equine enthusiast and the novice alike. Join us for yet another year of top competition under the live oaks held on the grounds of the pastoral Live Oak Plantation, a 5,000-acre thoroughbred breeding farm located minutes from Ocala.”

The Fat Tire Festival runs Friday through Sunday, 3080 SE 80th St., Ocala. Tickets for the Santos Epic Ride are $50. Go to the Santos Fat Tire Festival website for full details.
After A Full Day, Unwind At The Symphony
Perhaps after a full day of outdoor activity, you’ll want to relax and relish in the sounds of the symphony in downtown Ocala. We are so lucky to have the Reilly Arts Center located at the Tuscawilla Park in Ocala. An evening at the symphony is not only relaxing and cultural, but quite affordable. Wrap up your day with the sounds of Austria this weekend.
Begin the evening by waltzing along to the Blue Danube, take in the magnificent lake region of Austria with OSO Resident Composer Evan Kassof’s “Im Salzkammergut”, and be in awe with “Titan”, Mahler’s Symphony No. 1.
“From Austria With Love”: The Ocala Symphony Orchestra will perform Saturday and Sunday with a romantic nod to Austria. The concerts will open with the “The Blue Danube,” the beloved waltz composed by Johann Strauss II. There is a local touch on the program, as OSO will perform “Im Salzkammergut,” a work by the orchestra’s resident composer Evan Kassof.
Ticket prices range from $15 – $35 per person. Please visit www.reillyartscenter.com for more details.
