CHRIS AND ROB DESINO As the principals of Ocala Horse Properties, the brothers are from Rochester, New York. Their drive and determination showed early on as the twins were top performers in every sport they played. But it was competitive rowing where they first made a mark on the national scene. EXPERIENCE THE OHP TEAM DIFFERENCE While attending Hobart College, they were two-time National Collegiate Champions. After graduation, the brothers moved to Philadelphia where they trained and competed for the US National & World Championship Team. Prior to the 2000 Olympics, Rob suffered an unfortunate career ending injury and they turned their focus to another passion — restaurants. STACY LARSSON As a horsewoman, Stacy loves her Ocala lifestyle. As a real estate agent, she loves sharing this lifestyle with others. Having lived in Ocala for more than 20 years, Stacy knows the ins and outs of the community and is well versed in the nuances of Ocala life. She has worked with Hudson Phillips for the past 5 years, and recently transitioned to the Ocala Horse Properties office where she is excited to put her equestrian skills to work for her clients. Stacy trains dressage horses and imports horses for resale. She recently retired her stallion, Beniditto, who she trained to Grand Prix and competed internationally. He’s currently leased out and teaching another rider the ropes. Meanwhile, Stacy has multiple horses in the pipeline, including some babies in Europe that she hopes to import in the near future. She and her husband Olof have a 20-acre farm, Hidden Acres Dressage, in the heart of horse country. They initially moved to Ocala here to pursue their careers as horse professionals. Since settling in Ocala in 2000, Stacy has watched Ocala grow and flourish. The Larsson’s settled in Ocala due to the beautiful year-round climate, proximity to the equestrian lifestyle, access to nature and outdoor recreation, and a wonderful community in which they are raising their boys. Now 13 and 7, their boys attend private school in Ocala and are active in sports outside of school. Stacy has built an impeccable reputation for being honest in her horse sales business and always looks out for her customer’s best interest when choosing the right horse. Because of her love of building her own farm, real estate has become a passion and natural second career for her. In business, Stacy seeks to achieve excellence. AMY ATKINS Amy Atkins and her husband Peter began wintering in Ocala with their horses in 2000. They purchased a 10-acre farm in 2006 and their son Owen was born a year later. The warm climate and the access to local competitions won them over and they moved fromVermont to Ocala permanently in 2023. Amy has evented through the Intermediate level and earned her US Dressage Federation Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medals. She’s also an accomplished endurance rider with international success. In 2018 she was the only American to complete the 100 Mile TomQuilty Gold Cup Endurance Race in Tasmania, Australia. Her husband Peter grew up in Tasmania and in 2010 rode for the Australian eventing team at the World Games. A very diverse horsewoman who loves all aspects of the horse world, Amy found Ocala to be the perfect place to live. ONWEDNESDAYAUGUST 30, 2023, Hurricane Idalia made landfall in Keaton Beach, Florida, causing rampant destruction with flash floods and winds that reached 125 mph. Water levels near Cedar Key reached a record 6.8 feet, and the storm surge water level was at 8.9 feet. According to preliminary estimates from Moody’s Analytics, Hurricane Idalia caused between $12 billion and $20 billion in damage. Just eleven months earlier, on September 23, 2022, Hurricane Ian roared ashore at 150 mph near Fort Myers, causing near total destruction (97 percent of the buildings in Fort Myers Beach were either damaged or completely destroyed) and nearly $112 billion in damages. And that number is still growing. So it’s no wonder that Floridians are looking for a hurricane safe haven. The Wall Street Journal asked Climate Alpha—a company that uses AI to build forecasting models based on data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency related to past events, predictions of future weather, an analysis of local government disaster policies, and infrastructure— to come up with a list of areas in Florida with the least combined risk from hurricanes, flooding and strong winds. The winner? Ocala and Marion County. According to Climate Alpha, Ocala, located in the center of the state, had the lowest risk of coastal flooding and inland flooding of any city in Florida, and the third-lowest risk for high winds and drought. It isn’t that Ocala is immune to storms: Hurricane Irma hit the area in 2017, causing power outages and some localized flooding. But local officials say that by the time storms reach that far inland, they lose much of their momentum. Indeed, there was some concern about the potential impact of Hurricane Idalia in August, but Ocala—about 100 feet above sea level—had no significant damage, and minor power outages were quickly restored, according to the Ocala Police Department. OHP’s Matt Varney was interviewed by the Wall Street Journal for the article which ran in October 2023, but, of course, there’s so much more to the story. Matt says more and more buyers are looking for inland areas where they don’t have to worry about hurricanes all the time. “The attraction to Ocala and Marion County is certainly the value, and in our market, access to land for equestrian activities, but certainly in the last few years, many buyers have brought up concerns about hurricanes. Because we are so far inland, even when storms threaten the area, they usually diminish or even dissipate by the time they reach us. It becomes more of a rain event than anything else, and that’s a big draw. Especially as prices for hurricane coverage and homeowners insurance skyrocket,” says Matt. “Of course, they also are attracted to Ocala because it has less traffic and development, and prices are lower than many other parts of the state,” he says. It’s also worth noting that Marion County has one of the lowest homeowner insurance premiums in the state. As of March, the average was $1,894 a year, according to the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation. That compares with $5,665 in Miami Dade County, $5,710 in Palm Beach County, $5,519 in Broward County (Fort Lauderdale) and $7,584 in Monroe County (the Florida Keys). The only county in Florida with cheaper premiums than Marion was Sumter, just south of Ocala. Like the rest of Florida, however, Ocala has seen a rise in real-estate prices. According to Redfin, the median price for luxury homes is up 18%, to $885,000, so far in 2023. Vacant-land prices on the northwest side of Ocala, closest to the World Equestrian Center are now double the price from a few years ago, Matt says. “But Ocala is still affordable compared to Wellington and Palm Beach, which have strong equestrian communities as well. Despite the increase, homes in Ocala, especially at the higher end, aren’t as costly as in many other areas of Florida.” The numbers certainly back that up. For example, the median sales price of a luxury home in Ocala was $710,000 in the second quarter of 2023, versus $3 million in Boca Raton, $1.5 million in Tampa and $3.3 million in Wellington, according to data from Redfin. Matt continues to see a bright future for Ocala and greater Marion County, especially as a safe haven from storms. “People want to find an easier life…where they don’t have to deal with the storms all the time.
